CPR

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life saving measure that is performed on somebody that has lost consciousness like heart attack, cardiac arrest, drowning or not breathing properly.

CPR principle is based on giving the victim 30 chest compression and 2 rescue breath repeatedly till the victim gains consciousness or till the needed help arrives.

CPR aid in circulating oxygenated blood to the brain and other vital organs for them to stay alive. What happen during unconsciousness is that there is oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and the victim can only survive this for a few minutes if help did not come. CPR though not a guarantee but can revive the victim when given on time.

Steps of performing CPR are:

  • Lie the victim flat on his or her back on a rigid surface and stay close to the victim’s shoulder.
  • Give the victim 30 chest compression with your two hands over each other, press hard and fast in between the nipples as this helps to restore circulation of blood.
  • Open the airway by tilting the neck back.
  • Give two rescue breath after closing the nose and cover the victim’s mouth with yours.

Call for help before you start giving CPR.

The worst thing is not doing anything, call for help and attempt CPR while you wait for help. And if you are unsure of what to do, just continue given chess compression before the arrival of qualified personnel or medical treatment.

It is advisable for everybody to learn how to perform CPR.
