Every 4th of May of each year is set aside to appreciate and celebrate our brave and courageous fire fighters worldwide .

Our firefighters have saved many lives from death, saved our built environment from destruction with their knowledge, skills and timely response to fighting fire.

The idea was birth by JJ Edmondson after five firefighters who were on a rescue mission on the 2nd of   December, 1998 lost their lives in a bushfire at Linton in Victoria, Australia due to the sudden change in direction of the wind and engulfed their fire truck, thereby killing all the five firefighters inside the truck.

JJ Edmondson who is a also a firefighter then sent an email in January 1999 to his colleagues after the incidence to have an international holiday to honour the firefighters who lost their lives.

St. Florian’s day (4th of May) was choosing. St. Florian was also a legendary firefighter who has always been honour on May 4.

The symbol of the IFFD is the red and blue ribbon that are each five centimeters long and one centimeter wide. The red colour stands for elements of fire while the blue stands for elements water. The white and blue colour also represent emergency services.

You save lives and and keep our built environment safe.
