A facility security audit helps to identify how well the facility is protected against probable threats.
An audit applies the general risk management concepts. It identifies risks that are not currently being controlled as well as risks that are not being controlled adequately.
It searches for potential threats that could disrupt the operation of the facility. This is accomplished by analyzing all aspects of the facility operation.
The planning of physical security begins with an audit of the current state of all facility security practices.
The types of facility and the business being conducted in the facility will determine the level of details and specific questions to answer during the audit.
Some questions to answer during the facility security audit include:
- Does the facility have closed-circuit television (CCTV)? is it monitored?
- Are there security lights on the grounds surrounding areas where occupants/employees may walk?
- Do you have training for employees on security?
- Are employees required to wear a badge or have identification at all times when in the facility?
- Do you conduct practice drills regarding fire, natural disasters, or bomb threats?
Role of facility managers in facility security
The role of the facility manager with regard to security is to partner with the security team (either in-house or outsourced) which is an integral part of the organization’s security strategy to:
- Assess security risks.
- Develop a mitigation plan.
- Implement required changes to the facility and processes.
- Assume responsibility for the security of FM systems.
The facility security audit should be conducted periodically to ensure occupants’ compliance with policies and procedures and the adequacy of the security measures against existing and emerging threats, as the best plans lose their effectiveness over time if they are not monitored.
