IFMA: Competency #10 – Project Management

Project Management is one of the eleven competency areas as identified by the International Facility Management Association’s global job task analyses.

What is Project management?

Project management is the disciplined coordination of people and activities to accomplish an objective.

Why is Project management important?

  • Wide range of projects assigned to the facility organization.
  • Need to accomplish all the objectives within the desired time periods and budgets.

How the Project management competency helps the Facility Manager

  • Develop project plans to support the organization’s goals and strategies.
  • Manage a broad range of projects that vary in scope, complexity, duration and financial Risk.
  • Evaluate outcomes.

Examples

  1. Define and implement projects that include:
    1. Purpose.
    2. Size.
    3. Scope.
    4. Schedule.
    5. Budget.
    6. User needs.
  2. Plan projects with:
    1. Location.
    2. Cost control.
    3. Time control.
    4. Quality control.
    5. Schedule plan.
    6. Safety assurance.
    7. Sequence of tasks.
    8. Resources needed.
    9. Implementation of tasks.
    10. Vendors and/or contractors needed.
    11. Development/Construction documents needed.
  3. Develop contract specifications that includes time, cost, quality, safety, and other parameters.
  4. Evaluate project outcomes. Review the final budget versus cost, change orders, and schedule.
  5. Identify the success drivers of every project and put measurements in place to measure project management performance and project success.
